Like much of the surrounding areas, Conyers was impacted by General Sherman"s "March to the Sea" in the Civil War; however, the story goes that General Sherman had a friend in the Conyers area, but spared the area from destruction because the general did not know exactly where his friend lived.
Conyers is a mere twenty miles east of downtown Atlanta, and its close proximity and affordable housing account for the city's and Rockdale county's steady growth. Site of the 1996 Olympic Equestrian Events, the Georgia International Horse Park features state-of-the-art facilities and multi-intensity trails for bike and horse riding. Georgia Perimeter College plans to establish a facility in the Conyers area in 2008. For the spiritual minded, visitors of diverse religious backgrounds enjoy the peaceful setting of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. This serene monastery was founded in 1944 by the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (commonly known as Trappists) and is located on an historic 2,000 acre former plantation.
The housing market is plentiful and less expensive than the national average. Some of the employers in the area include John Deere and AT&T, and there is plenty of national retail shopping and restaurants, and the new Mall at Stonecrest is just down the road. |
