| Located just 25 miles south of Atlanta, McDonough was founded in 1823 and was named to honor Commodore Thomas McDonough after a brilliant victory on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. McDonough today has grown to be one of the largest cities in Henry County. The 2005 census estimate indicates McDonough had a population of more than 15,000, which was an increase of more than 80% from 2000. McDonough hosts a number of annual events, including the Henry County Fair, the Geranium Festival, and the Roberto Clemente World Series.
